Our History

The Birth of a Vision

People to People International (PTPI) was born out of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s vision for peace and international understanding. Inspired by his historic meeting with Nikita Khrushchev in 1955, Eisenhower recognised that lasting peace could not rely on governments alone. It also required relationships between ordinary people across cultures and borders.

Guided by this belief, PTPI was founded in 1956 to promote peace through personal diplomacy, cultural exchange, and grassroots human connection.

Our Growth and Global Reach

Officially established as a nonprofit in 1961 with the support of J. C. Hall, PTPI grew into a global network spanning communities across more than 160 countries over its history.

For decades, PTPI has brought people together through cultural exchange, educational engagement, leadership development, and citizen diplomacy, creating opportunities for individuals and communities to build understanding across borders.

Like many international organisations, PTPI experienced significant disruption during and after the COVID period. Today, the organisation is engaged in a structured global rebuild focused on sustainability, partnerships, youth engagement, and long-term resilience.

A New Chapter: The Global Coordination Centre

In 2023, PTPI entered a new phase by establishing its Global Coordination Centre (GCC) in Brussels.

Brussels, with its international outlook and multicultural environment, provides a strong base for supporting PTPI’s evolving global network. The GCC helps coordinate international activity, strengthen collaboration between chapters and partners, and support local initiatives connected to PTPI’s wider mission.

As a volunteer-led organisation, PTPI continues to believe that meaningful change often begins at community level, through relationships built on trust, dignity, and shared human experience.

President Eisenhower’s belief in the transformative power of personal connection remains at the heart of PTPI.

Today, our work continues to be guided through four interconnected pillars:

  • Experience: Encouraging meaningful cross-cultural engagement and exchange
  • Connect: Building relationships and global community
  • Learn: Expanding understanding through dialogue, education, and shared perspectives
  • Lead: Supporting individuals to contribute positively within their communities and beyond

While the world has changed significantly since PTPI’s founding, the core belief remains the same:

👉 peace grows through understanding between people.

Our Guiding Philosophy

Our Global Structure

PTPI operates through a distributed international network spanning the Americas, Asia, and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa).

This structure allows chapters and partners to remain locally grounded while contributing to wider global cooperation and understanding.

PTPI’s strength continues to come from the dedication of volunteers, chapter leaders, partners, and participants who believe that respectful human connection still matters in a complex and rapidly changing world.

PTPI continues to evolve while remaining grounded in its founding purpose.

As the organisation rebuilds for the future, current areas of focus include:

  • youth engagement and mobility
  • cultural and educational exchange
  • community partnerships
  • citizen diplomacy
  • global collaboration across cultures and perspectives

We invite individuals, communities, and partners who share these values to join us in helping create a more connected and understanding world.

“Granddad felt very strongly that everyday citizens of the world wanted peace and could attain it much more effectively without government interference or representation. Having seen the slow impact government had, he realized that world peace and understanding had to come from the soul of human nature and that governments could not dictate the human heart, only reflect it.”
