About Mombasa
PTPI Kenya is a dynamic, youth-led chapter of People to People International, based in Mombasa, a historic coastal city in southeastern Kenya along the Indian Ocean. As Kenya’s oldest city and a long-standing crossroads of cultures, Mombasa provides a powerful setting for citizen-led peacebuilding and community action.
About Mombasa
Mombasa has a rich and layered history shaped by African, Arab, Indian, and European influences. Its Swahili heritage is visible in the architecture, traditions, and everyday life of the city, particularly in the Old Town and historic landmarks such as Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Mombasa serves as the capital of Mombasa County and is Kenya’s second-largest metropolitan region.
Surrounded by coastal ecosystems, marine parks, and wildlife reserves, the region highlights both the beauty and fragility of Kenya’s natural environment. This context strongly informs PTPI Kenya’s work in environmental education, climate awareness, and community stewardship.
What PTPI Kenya Does
PTPI Kenya works with young people in both urban and rural communities to strengthen peace, environmental responsibility, and civic engagement. The chapter delivers youth-centred programmes that combine education, dialogue, and hands-on action, including:
-
Peacebuilding and intercultural dialogue initiatives
-
Climate and environmental education in schools
-
Community-based tree-planting and conservation projects
-
Youth leadership development and advocacy
Through close collaboration with schools, teachers, community organisations, and international partners, PTPI Kenya empowers young people to act as changemakers today, not only leaders of tomorrow.
Flagship Initiative
PTPI Kenya leads the Adopt a Plant (Tree) Programme, a long-running, school-based environmental initiative that combines practical climate action with education, responsibility, and community involvement. The programme has been implemented continuously for several years and engages learners, teachers, and local communities in sustainable environmental stewardship.
Stay Connected
PTPI Kenya regularly shares updates, photos, and community activities through its social media channels.
