From the heart of the Indian Ocean, long-time PTPI At-Large member and university teacher Christine Hawksworth continues to inspire with her resilience, kindness, and commitment to community.
Despite the challenges of power outages, extreme heat, and ongoing cyclone recovery efforts, Christine remains a strong and compassionate presence in Mayotte. She recently opened her home to a fellow islander from Dominica—showing that even in the most trying times, hospitality and human connection shine through.
Christine teaches at the Université de Mayotte, where she works with students in a complex and evolving educational environment. She’s currently preparing a student performance of “Stand Up for the Abolition of Slavery”, using music as a powerful tool for reflection and unity.
🇾🇹 About Mayotte: A French overseas territory nestled between Madagascar and Mozambique, Mayotte is known for its rich marine life, vibrant coral reefs, and volcanic beauty. With more than half of the population under 18 and many young people navigating life as refugees, the island is full of both challenges and promise.
Christine’s energy and global perspective were felt at the PTPI European Conference in Sardinia, where she brought warmth, insight, and a true spirit of Peace Through Understanding.
We’re grateful to Christine and to all our PTPI members working in their communities to make the world a little brighter—one act of kindness at a time.
